Natural stone lot photography: why we photograph the parcel you buy

Veining, tone shifts and inclusions are the product. How lot-level photography closes the gap between approved sample and shipped bulk.

No two amethyst beads are identical. That is the appeal of natural stone — and the exact reason sample rounds go wrong when suppliers photograph one hero strand and ship from an unseen parcel.

Variation is the product

Veining, tone shifts and inclusions are what natural stone is. Lab-created stones trade that variation for consistency, and both positions are legitimate — when they are stated. The problem starts when a “natural” listing is quietly fulfilled from whatever lot was closest to the door.

Lot photography, as a process

For stone, pearl and gemstone styles, the lot you are buying is photographed before dispatch: same light, same day, same background. You approve the parcel, not a representative piece. What you approved is what ships.

How to specify this in your RFQ

State it in the notes: “photograph the actual lot before dispatch”. A supplier with lot control will confirm in writing; one without will change the subject.
